HARRIET TUBMAN

Harriet Tubman was born in 1819 in Dorchester County, Maryland. She was born with the name Araminta Ross and born into slavery. her parents were Ben Greene Ross  and Harriet Greene Ross. In 1844 Harriet married her husband John Tubman that would change her life forever.

As a child Harriet lived on a plantation owned by Edward Brodas her would beat her all the time. The first family she was rented to had her check muskrat traps and because of it she got the measles. she was sent back to Brodas for being “incompetent”. Once she got better she was rented to another family to house keep and babysit but was sent back for eating a sugar cube.

Harriet spent most of her adult life freeing slaves from the South and sneaking them to the North. She began doing this after she ran away from her husband in 1849. She told him what she was doing and he said he would not go with her. She would run down from the free states in secret and help slaves escape to the free states to live a different life. This is why Harriet became famous.

During her many journeys, Harriet would become to be known as Moses. The authorities thought that she was a man so they were always on the search for a male.  The slaves felt hope because of the work that Harriet and started singing songs about her coming from the North and freeing them. Once Harriet met up with the escaped slaves she brought them up along a secret underground highway called the Underground Railroad. Along this underground roadway Harriet and the slaves she was helping would stay certain places like peoples’ barns, basements and even under trees to sleep and rest.

Harriet didn’t really have a  career but she just helped free slaves for many many years. Because of her fame from doing this, she even got asked and recruited top be a spy for the military.

Harriet got her fame for being a conductor on the Underground Railroad and freeing so many slaves. Because of her freeing all the slaves, they began singing songs about her because of their hope that Harriet would help them.

Harriet lived the end of her life in her house in Canada and got recognition for all the things that she had done in her life. Sadly, Harriet died from pneumonia and old age in 1913. She was buried at Fort Hill in Auburn, New York. This is now a very famous place.
